The Necessity of Financial Support for PITRI

At PITRI our commitment to advancing and growing a hub for trauma research in WA is firm and unshakeable.  We would like to conduct, support and encourage research at different levels of scientific expertise and endeavour, and to support all clinician researchers and scientific researchers to uncover insights that will make our society safe and improve patient outcomes when injured.
Conducting research of this magnitude and impact requires a strong and reliable base of financial support.  Our mission is to create a central hub for injury research on the West Coast of Australia.  There are many successful models of such research institutes in WA, albeit none of them are trauma and injury specific.

DATA  RESEARCH

Our common form of research involves acquiring access to critical injury databases from various sources such as health department, hospitals, police, and insurance companies.  This data enables us to identify trends, risk factors and outcomes of healthcare, providing vital information to improve patient care and support at-risk populations.  Unfortunately accessing some databases comes with costs, particularly when linking multiple databases from different sources together.  An example is linking the police and main roads data of the details of a road crash with the health system databases (of which there are many), and with other databases such as insurance and Social services in order to get a full account of the entire journey from injury to recovery and rehabilitation (physical and vocational).

LABORATORY  RESEARCH

Scientific benchtop and laboratory research, such as blood products, coagulation (blood clotting) studies , and stem cell work demands substantial investment due to the sophisticated equipment and materials required.  This type of research however can open doors to groundbreaking treatments and innovations in trauma care, that cannot be achieved in any other way.

ANNUAL TRAUMA CONFERENCES:
Disseminating Findings

Once we uncover significant discoveries, we believe in sharing them with the broader scientific community here and nationally not only to drive positive change but also to have our scientific rigour challenged and tested.  Similarly the WA hub of research excellence will also embrace other researchers findings and help to distribute positive outcomes from all researchers work.
This necessitates funds for hosting scientific meetings and conferences, helping researchers present their findings and to invite experts to present locally in WA.  PITRI has supported partner organisations to regularly host a State Trauma Conference in Perth.
Without local state conferences, Western Australian scientists and those early in their research career are handicapped by the long travel distances to other sites of learning and knowledge exchange.

FUNDING COLLABORATIION & GOVERNANCE

Supporting Our Research Team

While PITRI collaborates with research organisations and scientists, funding these partnerships is essential to supporting good research with a track record of excellence.
The research hub will provide and support a team of research staff and statisticians to enhance the difficult journey of research grant applications and other processes for early researchers
We also allocate funds for formal governance, utilising external auditors and providing secretarial support for our organisation
Additionally, we maintain our website as a crucial platform for disseminating knowledge and progress
